The US Department of Justice is seeking public comments on risks associated with cryptocurrencies in the financial system. The Treasury said in a statement it wants to hear from the public what actions should the US government and federal agencies take to mitigate the risks.
In a list of questions, the Treasury wants to know if it succeeded to define the illicit financing risks associated with cryptocurrencies, how might future crypto-related innovations present new illicit finance risks, what risks might pose non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and so on. Comments will be accepted before November 3, 2022.
The move comes shortly after the Biden administration revealed a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency market. The document says that the government agencies should investigate privacy and protection, energy consumption related to mining cryptocurrencies as well as the benefits and risks of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
